GME Painting Contractors entered a competitive team in the annual Rotary Club Dragon Boat Race, which took place at Pugneys in Wakefield on Saturday 9th July 2016.
Competing alongside 29 other teams, all in the aid of charity, the 8th Rotary Dragon Boat Race saw GME battle it out on the water for the new Stuart Wardell Memorial Trophy. The trophy was named in honour of the late Stuart Wardell who set up the event alongside his colleagues in 2009.
GME, raising money for local charity Levi’s Star, were one of the fastest qualifiers through their three heats of the 250m course and took the line for the final with five other teams full of anticipation and fight to claim the Dragon Boat race title. Such is the popularity of the event, it was not just Wakefield pride up for stake with teams entering from Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield and even a team from the Communication Union’s Head Office in Newcastle.
In the final, GME battled hard and in a photo finish were awarded second place, finishing less than half a second behind the team run by Amanda O’Neil, the daughter of Stuart Wardell, who had named her boat Stuarts Big Kiss in honour of her dad.
GME always try to get involved with local charity events, especially those in the Wakefield area and have previously completed races, Skydives and attended Charity Evenings for Levi’s Star.
