GME at Bradford City Hall

26th May 2017

We here at GME are again proud to announce that we were selected to work on an amazing project, this time at Bradford City Hall. The City Hall has been a prominent feature of the city of Bradford for over a century, now open to the public, GME were invited to ensure that this amazing building retains its charm.

The team at GME were contracted to paint some of the corridors, ceilings and walls after some recent electrical work had seen some small damage. However, the task for the GME team came when we were asked to complete it in 2 days, out of hours, to ensure that no public were present. Meaning our team gave up their weekends, to restore this marvelous building!

Bradford City Hall is a Grade 1 listed building, based in the city center. The building, Venetian gothic in design, was constructed between 1870-1873 and has been at the heart and soul of the city ever since. The original building was designed by Lockwood and Mawson, who beat out 31 other applicants to design the hall. After taking 3 years to build, it was officially opened on 9th September 1873 by then mayor, Matthew Thompson.

Since then the building has seen a number of extensions, the first in 1909 to add another council chamber, more committee rooms and a banqueting hall. It was once again extended in 1914, with a new entrance and a staircase in baroque marble.

The building was officially listed grade 1 on 14th June 1963. Attaining City Hall status in 1965 to reflect its prominence to the city of Bradford. In 1992, the prominent bell tower was deemed unsafe, meaning the bells were stopped. However, 1997, the bells were once again restored to full glory, ensuring this iconic building was restored to its fully glory once again.

GME are proudly building themselves a reliable reputation around the Yorkshire area. We try and ensure that we can remove as much stress from painting and decorating as possible. For more information, do not hesitate to give one of our friendly team a call on: 01924 723 723.
